1. Schedule - The Day at a Glance

At the present moment, the morning bell rings at 8:40 a.m. for entry and class begins at 8:45 a.m.. Recesses are at 10:00 a.m. and 1:35 p.m.. Dismissal is at 2:55 p.m. Lunch is from 11:35 until 12:15 p.m. Students eat from 11:35 until approximately 12:00, they then have a short outdoor recess. A lunch supervisor is assigned to the Junior Kindergarten room for this entire period of time.

2. Attendance/Safe Arrival

Whenever your child is ill or will not be attending classes, please call the school at 969-2101 as soon as possible to let us know. When you will be picking up your child, please call us in advance. The teacher will have your child ready to leave when you arrive. You must also let us know in writing should someone other than yourself (the parent) come to pick up your child.

3. Transportation

The Sudbury Student Services Consortium (School Bus Transportation Services) will mail a letter to parents regarding transportation. If you have not received this information by the end of August, please contact them at 521-1234. All changes to your child’s pick-up address and/or drop-off address must be arranged through the Sudbury Student Services Consortium two days in advance. If the transportation information you gave the school at the time of registration has changed, please notify them of such.

4. Staggered Entrance

Junior Kindergarten children do not come to school during the first week of September. J.K. students will begin during the second week of September. That week they will come to school for one day only. The regular schedule will begin the third week of September. More information will be mailed to parents over the summer.

5. Footwear - Running Shoes

A pair of labeled running shoes, with no mar soles (light coloured) will be required for indoor wear. These are to remain at school. Slip-on types or those with velcro closures are required. No slippers. Footwear will be sent home at Christmas and Winter Break to be checked by the parent for proper fit. Outdoor shoes should also be slip-on or with velcro closures.

6. School Bag

A large school bag, or a pack sack (appropriately labeled - with the child’s name, address and home bus number inside the school bag) is required for each student, into which school notices, library books, lunch bag, and your child’s creations can be placed. Please purchase a lunch bag that can be carried inside the school bag.

7. Labels

Please make sure that your child’s school bag, coat, hats, mittens, paint shirt, running shoes, clothes and other belongings have his/her name on them. Children often do not recognize their own belongings. This labeling is so important especially since it is common that two or more students have identical clothing items (i.e. boots, running shoes, etc.).

8. Name Tag

A name tag should be pinned on the inside of your child’s jacket (and school bag) for the first two weeks of school. The name tag should have the following information:

CHILD’S FULL NAME
Name of School and Grade - The days on which your child attends classes
Address and Tel. number and/or
Address where the child is to be dropped-off (i.e. sitter - if this is the case)
Bus route numbers

9. Parent-Teacher Meeting

These meetings are scheduled before your child begins school. It’s a great way to introduce yourself and your child to the teacher. Please see the covering letter for more information.

10. Photograph

A small photo of your child, for the teacher, would be appreciated. These will be placed in the “Religion Center” and will give your child a greater sense of belonging in his classroom.

11. Blanket, Paint Smock and Other Items

  • Your child will need a labeled small blanket and a small pillow for “rest time” in the afternoon
  • Paint smocks (check with your child’s teacher at the parent-teacher interview if one is required)
  • Please send (in a labeled zip lock bag) underwear, pants, and a pair of socks in case of an “accident” or a spill
  • Please send a large box of Kleenex

12. Preparing Your Child for Junior Kindergarten

Should you wish to prepare your child for Junior Kindergarten, here are some habits to promote or suggestions of activities to do:

  • saying prayers (you can also read illustrated Bible/religious books together)
  • Often, pre-school children want to learn how to print their names. If you teach them
    this at home, please use Upper and Lower case letters. Example: Kayla and not
    KAYLA, Justin and not JUSTIN
  • getting dressed alone (shoes, boots, coats, etc.)
  • blowing one’s nose independently
  • going to the washroom alone
  • playing with others calmly (without arguing)
  • putting toys and other things away (tidying up)
  • using crayons, scissors, and glue (exercise these skills often)
  • learning how to deal with one’s anger, shyness, crying, impatience
  • sharing, waiting one’s turn
  • politeness and respect of others

13. School Year Overview

Here are some of the concepts we will be developing this school year:

  • (colours) les couleurs (i.e. yellow, blue, etc.) rouge, jaune, vert, etc.
  • (over/under, before/after, up/down, big/small, heavy/light, slow/fast, etc.)
  • sur, sous, en haut, en bas, grand, petit, moyen, autour de, derrière, devant,
    avant, après, court, long, léger, lourd, lent, vite, etc.
  • (shapes: circle, square, triangle, rectangle, star, oval, etc.)
    les formes (i.e. le cercle, le triangle, le carré, le rectangle, l’étoile, l’ovale, etc.)
  • (number recognition: 1 to 10) la notation des nombres de 1 à 10
  • recognize and use patterns
  • sort, classify and match objects and symbols (letters and numbers)
